Arts Umbrella News

Winter Olympics and Granville Island

The 2010 Winter Olympics will bring many visitors, activities, as well as many changes to how Vancouver residents will travel in the city. Access to Granville Island will be challenging during this time, with parking changes beginning February 1.

UPDATE as of February 4, 3:45pm

CMHC (Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation) advises that the torch relay may be coming to Granville Island on February 12 from approximately 12:49pm to 12:59pm.

It is estimated that the relay will interrupt Granville Island traffic along the following route:

Olympic Street Car from Cambie and 2nd Avenue to Granville Island, onto Granville Island (Anderson St.), turning right on Cartwright St., past Arts Umbrella towards Granville Island Hotel, then west along Johnston Street (past Emily Carr University) to False Creek Ferry Landing.

Traffic control will be conducted by VANOC and Vancouver Police Department.

Click here for a map of changes taking place on Granville Island.

February 1-11
Pay parking will be implemented across Granville Island. All free parking will be eliminated.

Between 10am-10pm, paid parking will be available: $3/hour for a maximum of two hours. (NOTE: parking is FREE before 10am.)

Many parking areas will be inaccessible, including the parking lot east of Arts Umbrella.
Entire Island will remain accessible to the public.

DROP OFF: go to the lower level of the Emily Carr parkade (accessible from Old Bridge Street: see Granville Island map available above), and turn your flashers on. Parking attendants will know not to ticket vehicles with flashers on.

STAY: pay for parking in the parkade.

February 12-28
NO vehicle access in front of Arts Umbrella. All vehicles must turn left onto Old Bridge Street.
Parking and drop-off still available in the Emily Carr parkade, based on parking availability.

We encourage Arts Umbrella students and families to explore alternate transportation methods.
