Martina Kocmanová
In her multidisciplinary practice, Martina explores objects’ inner and outer relationships, pursuing the meanings embedded within materials, and the outcomes born from their unexpected unions. She often works with drawing, clay, glass, mixed media and materials gathered in nature. Each piece carries a story and a personal connection with various historical, psychological and physical dimensions, which together form a broader poetics.
Martina holds an MFA from the Studio of Sculpture at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague, CZ (2018) and a BFA from the Faculty of Fine Arts at the Brno University of Technology, CZ (2014). In 2018, she was a recipient of a general scholarship at Pilchuck Glass School, USA, and began introducing glass into her sculptural practice.
Martina has exhibited at venues in the Czech Republic, USA, and Canada, including the Deer Lake Gallery, Burnaby, CA, the National Gallery in Prague, CZ, and the Brno House of Arts, CZ. She is a founding member of KOMA annual comics art festival, Brno, CZ. Alongside her artistic practice, she works as a visual arts instructor at Arts Umbrella, Vancouver, where she supports children and youth in their artistic journeys.
