Nancy Chan Creative Horizons Program

These dynamic, no-cost programs help young artists develop imagination and expression in visual arts, theatre, and film.

The Nancy Chan Creative Horizons program brings no-cost, high-quality arts education to young people. Delivered out of Arts Umbrella’s Surrey Centre facility, the program features two streams: Artful Afternoons and Teen Arts Studio.

Artful Afternoons

This after-school program welcomes students ages 8–12 from a number of Surrey elementary schools, offering engaging opportunities in theatre and visual arts.

Students from participating schools are transported to and from Arts Umbrella Surrey Centre by bus, ensuring safe and reliable access. In theatre, students explore voice, movement, and text to bring stories to life, experimenting with elements such as mime, mask, song, and character creation. These playful activities help build confidence, presence, and collaboration. In visual arts, students work with a wide range of materials, from charcoal and pastels to paint and mixed media, to create original artworks. These experiences spark creativity, encourage self-expression, and foster a sense of pride in what students make together.

Teen Art Studio

Open to youth ages 13-19 from across Surrey, the Teen Arts Studio stream features two classes: Acting for Film and Visual Arts.

Acting for Film

Mondays at 5:00-7:00PM

Arts Umbrella Surrey Centre, 02-13678 100 Ave, Surrey

Film is a collaborative art form, incorporating acting, sound, lighting, cinematography, and directing to tell a story. Understanding how each art form adds its own artistic expression and style is an important part of any film actor’s development and success. This on-camera acting class will expand your awareness of the different aspects of film to learn how we, as actors, can explore ways of shifting, adjusting, and connecting to the performance and style to share the story.

Visual Arts

Tuesdays at 5:15-7:15PM

Arts Umbrella Surrey Centre, 02-13678 100 Ave, Surrey

Develop your skills and techniques in a student-driven class that is open to teens at all ability levels. You develop technical skills, personal forms of expression, critical thinking, and conceptual awareness through drawing, painting, and mixed media. This class is highly personalized and will be informed by the interests and creative approach of the students enrolled. Inspiration will be found within the students themselves as well as through exposure to modern and contemporary artists and works of art.
