Bailey Nicole Skelton’s Musical Theatre Journey

For Bailey Nicole Skelton, a passion for musical theatre has taken her from Arts Umbrella to the stages of New York City. Through Arts Umbrella’s Musical Theatre programs, including our General, Yearlong Intensive, and Troupe program between 2021 and 2025, Bailey developed not only her skills as a performer, but also the confidence to pursue a future in the industry.
Today, she is continuing her training at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA) in New York City, building on the strong artistic foundation, professional mindset, and supportive community she found at Arts Umbrella. Her journey reflects the transformative power of arts education: helping young people discover their potential, embrace new opportunities, and pursue their creative ambitions with confidence.
In this conversation, Bailey reflects on her time at Arts Umbrella, and the experiences that have shaped her journey so far.
What have you been up to since your time at Arts Umbrella?
I am currently studying at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City (AMDA NYC) with my focus being musical theatre! I moved to New York City last October and have been so incredibly lucky to be surrounded by so many talented classmates, teachers, and role models. Since moving, I have booked two performances at the popular cabaret venues Green Room 42 and Don’t Tell Mama, which have only furthered my love of both the city and the craft! Post-graduation, I am hoping to continue making my way in the industry and be an inspiration for others.
How would you describe your time at Arts Umbrella?
My time at Arts Umbrella was filled with so many unforgettable moments. The staff were very supportive and fostered a professional setting where it felt as though we were all treated like equals, setting us up for success for a future in the industry. But beyond the professionalism, I also was able to meet many people, both classmates and teachers, who I am so happy to consider life-long friends.
How has your experience at Arts Umbrella influenced who you are today?
Before Arts Umbrella, I never considered that I could ever pursue musical theatre professionally. I was scared of rejection, failure, and having to put myself out there, but Arts Umbrella gave me the opportunity to face those fears in a setting I felt very safe in. With lots of support from peers, and especially teachers, I decided I couldn’t let fear hold me back from what I love, and that’s how I’m still performing today! Arts Umbrella helped me find confidence in my abilities as both a performer and person.
If you were to give a piece of advice to current students, what would it be?
Practice professionalism now! Don’t talk over castmates or directors, always keep a positive mindset, and apply notes as quickly as possible (even if it wasn’t given specifically to you). The way you rehearse is the way you will perform, so creating these good habits now is a good way to start!
