Photography Programs
Arts Umbrella is home to one of the only fully functional educational darkrooms left in Vancouver. Students learn the fundamentals of photography, including exposure, depth-of-field, composition, photo developing, and presentation using a 35mm film camera. Technical skills learned include shooting speeds, black & white film processing, photograms, and cyanotypes. Cameras and all materials are provided for each student.

Darkroom Photography
Ages 9-12, 13-17
Use a 35mm camera to capture compelling black-and-white images, then develop and print them in our fully equipped darkroom.
What you’ll learn:
- Learn principles of photography including exposure, aperature, ISO, shutter speed, focus, lighting, and composition
- Safety and fundamentals of developing, chemical processing, and enlarging
- Experiment with cyanotypes, photograms, and pinhole photography

Digital Photography & Photoshop
Ages 9-12, 13-17
Capture images using DSLR cameras and bring them into Adobe Photoshop to fix, edit or push them beyond what a camera can capture.
What you’ll learn:
- Use DSLR cameras to compose and capture strong photographs
- Understand aperture, shutter speed, and ISO for exposure control
- Edit images using cropping, colour, and basic Photoshop tools
- Combine images using layering, collage, and simple effects
