Grace Gihm is a practicing artist, designer and an educator. Art has always been central to her identity; her childhood dream was to become an artist. She won a number of awards for her visual expression and creativity as a young artist. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts and Graphic Design from the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, RI. After working as a graphic designer in the United States for a few years, she returned to Vancouver, BC to pursue a degree in Education at the University of British Columbia. She received a distinguished art teacher award from the university upon completion and became a BC Certified Teacher. Her current research includes applying an interdisciplinary approach to teaching art and using technology as an integral part of art-making. As an educator, she believes that theory and practice should be inseparable and her artwork embodies this philosophy. In recent years, she has been reworking on her concepts from her past artwork to prepare for future exhibitions. Her classes provide students with opportunities for personal growth as individuals and as artists. She is passionate about creating lessons that inspire students to think visually and help them gain confidence through expressing their creativity. She joined Arts Umbrella in 2011, and teaches both Drawing & Painting and Digital & Media Arts classes.
