National Day for Truth and Reconciliation 2023
September 30th is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. For Arts Umbrella, this is an opportunity to learn and reflect on the history of the land we now call Canada, honour survivors of the residential school system, their families, and communities, remember the children that didn’t make it home, and explore how we can continue meaningful discussions on anti-racism and relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. Arts Umbrella believes that, as educators, we have a responsibility to share with our students and families the importance of this day.
On Saturday, September 30th, all Arts Umbrella students, families, and friends are invited and encouraged to join us for a meaningful day of reflection and education. Activities and talks will be age-appropriate and led by Indigenous artists and knowledge keepers.
Admission to each event is Pay-What-You-Can, with a suggested donation of $5 for each event, and $10 for bundled events. General admission to open programming from 10:00 AM-3:00 PM in the Third Floor Atrium is also available by suggested donation but does not include admission to the lectures, reading, or art projects. Every Child Matters T-Shirts
We have a special 2023 edition orange t-shirt for sale. The t-shirt features a design from Indigenous artist and Arts Umbrella Board member James Harry (Nexw’Kalus). Limited quantities are available.
All proceeds from this day and the t-shirt sales go to the Urban Native Youth Association and All My Relations Indigenous Society to support their work with local Indigenous youth.
