Erin D'Este
Arts Umbrella Volunteer since 1990

How have you volunteered your time at Arts Umbrella?
Oh, in so many ways. I volunteered at the Holt Renfrew fashion event as a dresser, ticket seller…anything to promote and heighten awareness of Arts Umbrella. I was a Splash co-chair for 3 years and then a member of the committee for 3 more years. Now, I am involved in the office and the organization in many more ways.
Also, my grandchildren have attended Arts Umbrella – the “Parent and Me” classes, the Summer programs, and many more. Arts Umbrella started after my kids were grown, but the next generation has taken full advantage of Arts Umbrella.
What memory really speaks to your continual involvement at Arts Umbrella?
It would have to be the Amacon Theatre Arts Outreach at Strathcona performance I saw. I get emotional thinking about it. During that performance, I realized how our volunteer efforts help facilitate what otherwise would not have been possible. It made me realize that we’re doing the right thing because the arts and being involved in the arts gives kids a chance to be more “childlike.” Through the arts they can be who they are without restriction: they can create in a nonjudgmental environment. It’s really what Arts Umbrella is all about.
What is your connection to “the arts”?
I’m a firm believer in the arts as an expression of the joy and freedom in doing what you love. It’s an outlet to be yourself. I was a ballet dancer and I have always had a strong appreciation of music. My mother and I would clean the house to operas and symphonies, although the type of music didn’t matter, it was just always playing! From Bach to Judy Garland, music and art always brought a sense of freedom and joy into my life.
Your advice to potential or new volunteers?
I’ve really enjoyed this last year of having a varied exposure to many aspects of Arts Umbrella. Everyone at Arts Umbrella is so appreciative and fun to work with, and there is an overall willingness to help on everyone’s part. There are so many areas that need assistance that volunteers should not limit themselves – we must help out in all areas of Arts Umbrella to realize how global the philosophy of the school really is.
Final thoughts?
In past years, my husband and I have been able to financially support Arts Umbrella. Now, I can appreciate how giving of my time is equally important. We have so many mementos from Arts Umbrella and now I can look back fondly on my memories, all because of the time I’ve given to Arts Umbrella.
