Arts Umbrella's Pre-Professional Theatre training offers an exciting and challenging experience of intensive training and performance opportunities. Designed for the serious and talented student considering a future in the theatre, this intense, fun, and rewarding year requires hard work and commitment. Work with an ensemble cast and mount a major production.

Junior Theatre Troupe

13-16 years
Participants develop the team spirit necessary for touring and producing a play. Fall session is dedicated to intensive training in movement, voice, improvisation, group scene studies and script work. During Winter session, students begin the process of mounting a play for performances in Metro Vancouver schools. The year culminates with public performances at The Waterfront Theatre. Past productions include The Adventures of Stuart Little (2009), Charlotte's Web (2008), Dorothy Meets Alice (2007), and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2006).

Senior Theatre Troupe

15-19 years

This class offers intensive training for committed students in voice, movement, non-verbal exercises and professional warm-up techniques. Troupe members focus on developing their process through scene work in the Fall session. Winter and Spring sessions are dedicated to mounting a professional production that tours to secondary school across Metro Vancouver. The year ends with public performances at The Waterfront Theatre. Past productions include "1984" (2009), The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) (2008), Unity 1918 (2007), and Twelfth Night (2006).

Musical Theatre Troupe

13-19 years
Troupe members work with industry professionals - including a director, choreographer and musical director - to gain valuable experience through intensive training in dance, voice and acting. Students immerse themselves in more advanced choreography, scene study and vocal training in ensemble and solo performances. They rehearse a production and take it on tour to local elementary schools, and finish the class with public performances at The Waterfront Theatre. Past productions include Honk! (2008), The Wiz (2007), and Bugsy Malone (2006).

Directing III

15-19 years
Students sharpen their directing skills and learn how to mount a professional touring production. Students direct short scenes with Junior or Senior Troupe actors and assist in the direction of the Junior and Senior Troupe year-end productions.

Prerequisite: Directing I and II and/or instructor approval, and participation in Junior or Senior Theatre Troupe
