Arts Umbrella offers a rigorous training program for aspiring actors including voice, movement, and choir. Participants are chosen by audition to take part in classes and troupes that emphasize teamwork, discipline, creative input and cooperation. A full year commitment is required.

 

Fees include: 165 hours of class time, extra rehearsal hours, technical rehearsals, headshot sitting fee, Troupe hoodie and tickets for three theatrical productions throughout the year.

Act One: Youth

Directing

 

Junior Theatre Troupe

13-16 years

Develop the team spirit necessary for touring and producing a play. Fall session is dedicated to intensive training in movement, voice, improvisation, group scene studies and script work. Winter and Spring sessions are dedicated to mounting a professional production that tours to elementary schools across Metro Vancouver. The year culminates with public performances at Waterfront Theatre, as part of Expressions.

Past productions include "Fantastic Mr. Fox" (2011), "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" (2010), "The Adventures of Stuart Little" (2009) and "Charlotte's Web" (2008).

Senior Theatre Troupe

15-19 years

Get your acting career started with intensive training in voice, movement, non-verbal exercises and professional audition techniques. Focus on developing your process and audition repertoire through skills based exploration and scene work in the Fall session. Winter and Spring sessions are dedicated to mounting a professional production that tours to secondary schools across Metro Vancouver. The year ends with public performances at the Waterfront Theatre, as part of Expressions.

 

Past productions include "Hecuba" (2011), "Much Ado About Nothing" (2010) "1984" (2009) and "The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged)" (2008).

Musical Theatre Troupe

13-19 years

Work with industry professionals in music, dance and theatre to build and polish your audition repertoire and gain valuable experience through intensive training in dance, voice and acting. Immerse yourself in advanced choreography, scene study and vocal training in ensemble and solo performances. Rehearse a full length Musical Theatre production, and complete the year with public performances at the Waterfront Theatre, as part of Expressions.


Past productions include "Dear Edwina, Jr" (2011) "Into the Woods, Jr." (2010), "Pirates of Penzance, Jr." (2009) and "Honk! Jr." (2008).

Act One: Youth

13-19 years

Prerequisite: Approval of the Artistic Director of Theatre & Music by email pmonizdesa@artsumbrella.com

 

This exciting year-long class will give students the opportunity to work with veterans of the Vancouver theatre industry. Students will use the skills they have learned to create and perform an original piece which will tour to elementary schools across Metro Vancouver. Students will also share their discoveries by creating and delivering workshops in schools.

 

This project is supported by the Youth Take Charge program at Canadian Heritage.

Directing

15-19 years

This year-long class sharpens your directing skills and teaches you the process of mounting a professional touring production. Work one-on-one with the directors of the Musical Theatre, Junior, or Senior Theatre Troupe to direct short scenes and assist in the direction of the Troupes' final productions, presented as part of Expressions.
