Course DescriptionsBallet: Class work starts with an introduction to ballet structure through beginning barre work, allegro (jumping) work and pointe work, and includes the development of a dance vocabulary, drawing on the classical ballet repertoire. Specific attention is placed on proper skeletal alignment and muscle development to ensure correct dance technique and good health. A pianist accompanies each class. Students will perform at the year-end Recital. Pointe Work: An exciting and essential part of a Ballet student's training, requiring strength and good body alignment. Emphasis is on technique and strength building. Classes include barre exercises and combinations in centre, progressing to pas de deux level training. Participation in pointe work is by teacher approval. Cecchetti Exam Preparation: Prepares students for Cecchetti Society of Canada exams each spring. Graded examinations by qualified examiners are scheduled as part of this course. The purpose of these examinations is to give students specific goals and to maintain development consistent with international standards. Jazz: Stresses alignment and functional body placement. Each class includes a warm-up, centre technique, across-the-floor patterns and a final combination of movement that develops coordination and strength. Students perform at the year-end Recital. Modern: Explores the principles and complex rhythmical structure of modern dance. Emphasis is on technique, placement, body alignment and performance quality. Classes are accompanied by a percussionist and include a warm-up, movement across the floor and a movement combination. Students will perform at the year-end Recital. Character: A fun complement to Ballet technique, designed to support and develop students' work in Ballet class. This dance form emphasizes movement coordination, choreography, rhythmical development and musicality. A pianist accompanies each class. Students will perform at the year-end Recital. Anatomy & Health for Dancers: Empowers active students to make informed health choices at a critical age. Taught by registered professionals, the program covers functional anatomy for technique & injury prevention, treatment & rehabilitation; nutritional education (clinical nutritionist); personal development through emotional health, self-awareness & coping skills (clinical psychologist); and massage therapy technique for dance (registered massage therapist). Boys Only: Moves through elements of male character dance, improvisation, creative movement, and fundamental dance technique. Older boys will begin traditional barre work to develop strength and allegro (jumps) incorporating both traveling and diagonal steps. Career Perspectives: Examines personal career objectives, training and employment opportunities at local, national, and international levels, and develops skills required for auditions and applications. Coaching and Conditioning: A combination of yoga, Pilates and somatic work to increase strength, flexibility and coordination, designed for the specific needs of each level. Teaches tailored exercise programs for proper daily warm-up. Flamenco: A traditional Andalucian (Southern Spain) dance form with guitar accompaniment combining footwork, arm work, palmas (hand clapping), and castanets.palos (dance rhythms and names) involved with Flamenco. Students perform at the year-end Recital. Improvisation & Composition: Develops skills in the rudimentary principles of improvisation including following and leading impulses, use of space, music and time in varying groupings from solo to ensemble. The class develops skills using improvisation as a tool to generate material for choreography. Beginning Pas de Deux (Partnering): Introduces the basic elements of classical partnering. Students perform a Character piece at the year-end Recital. Pas de Deux (Partnering): Building on the work established in Classical Variations, students are introduced to more advanced elements of classical partnering. Training includes alignment, weight transfer, strength development through supported adagio work, pirouette work, and lifts. Men's Work: An intense regime of exercises addressing muscular and cardio-vascular strength, flexibility and alignment. The class is for older boys, in preparation for pas de deux and ensemble work. Exercises include careful floor work examining anatomical efficiency and rigorous jump sequences. |
